Of all the races in the player's handbook, the half elf is probably the least attractive choice. The human is a mechanically superior choice every time. I'd like to come up with a simple fix to make them a bit better. Does anyone have any ideas?

Not sure if this would work but how about player gets to choose the following traits;
1 extra feat at first level OR 4 extra skill points at 1st level and 1 extra skill point at each additional level
AND
+2 Dexterity and -2 Constitution OR Low light vision, immunity to magic sleep effects, +2 racial bonus against enchantment spells or effects.
Rational: genetics, all half elves are not going to be the same. Dominant and recessive genes determine our make up. Why not in a half elf?

They already have low light vision and the elf's bonus to resist enchantments. I think a feat would tip them too far the other way. They already have some skill bonuses (boni?), so the four extra skill points seems a bit redundant. I think the problem with the half elf I'd that they have lots of little bonuses that don't add up to much.

I think I see what Jim means....
Instead of them definitely getting those bonuses, they could chose to take 1 from the first category (their human half) and one bonus from their Elven half. The choice of a feat and a Dex bonus is pretty powerful, but if you want to go all skills you can... or you can take your pick with other combos.
I quite like the ide myself.

Oh I see, sorry Jim. I completely misunderstood. I like the idea of giving them a choice of something extra based on their two parent races. I'll get thinking of a couple of things.

After much off board discussion I've come to the conclusion that it isn't worth making massive changes to the half-elf racial abilities.
The only thing I'd like to add is the ability to pick two favoured classes instead of the usual one. This at least gives the the 'multiclass nieche'.
