This is a skeleton history the Ionian Empire, meant to whet the appetite for more information on the Ionians and to act as a place holder until a more developed history replaces it.
Ionia was established as a colony of Gorandon as it expanded its control over Celenor around 1200 years ago.
As Gorandon became more dictatorial and overbearing, Ionia's Human, Elven & Nezumi leaders led a successful rebellion against Dwarven control starting around 800 years ago.
As the rebellion spread and became a continental civil war, they pushed Gorandon's forces back further north. Into this vacuum, Ionia established a republic led by a triumvirate, and advised by a senate made up of all the free peoples (founded 793 years ago at the start of the PR calendar = Pre Republic)
Humans, Elves and Nezumi each had one position on the Triumvirate, as befitting their position as drivers behind the rebellion and formation of the republic.
The Republic of Ionia expanded out into the lands vacated by the wounded Eternal Kingdom of Gorandon, eventually establishing 9 provinces of the Republic.
Over time due to plotting amongst the triumvires, and rebellions across the provinces the triumvires became more dictatorial, and the republic shifted from a representative government to a more controlling one. In response to this, the triumvirate was replaced by an elected First Citizen... this position evolved to become an Emperor.
There has now been an elf-led empire in place for the last ~ 302 years, with 6 true emperors and one who is considered a usurper having sat on the throne.
The citizens of the empire deify their leaders. One emperor has been stricken from records and is no longer worshipped.
The Ionian Republic started to expand during its later years as generals and senators pushed for glory and prestige. This is a process that accelerated during the rule of the emperors. Now there are 15 provinces of the Empire spanning most of Celenor.
The Ionians used captive & mercenary orc soldiers during its early years to fight off and then protect against the Dwarves. Later these orcs became incorporated into the Empire and became citizens.
The Empire’s Nezumi artificers then developed the Warforged as soldiers to fight in the emperor’s wars.
