The Ionian Empire has a wide variety of armed forces in its employ, and they will all be mentioned (if not detailed) below.
The most famous sight associated with Ionian armed forces are their famed legions. These consist of heavy infantry dressed in heavy armour (mostly banded mail, but with some elite units using plate, although this is rare). These troops are armed with a longsword, a tower shield and a long spear, and trained in a number of innovative techniques (such as using the point of their longswords). For ranged support they have both dart and sling, and the legions are often supported by auxiliaries that specialise in ranged attacks. Ionian legions also contain a cadre of low level arcane casters (most often sorcerers trained by the Galaspire Arcane Academy, but some elite units have Warmages assigned to them for devastating fire power).
An Ionian legion consists of approximately 5000 individuals, of which 4500 are front line heavy infantry, and the rest consist of command, arcane support, and other support staff.

One thing I might change is longsword to short sword as using a longsword in close formation would be difficult. Thrusting with a longsword would also be really akward. But I like the way the legion looks overall.
One major question. Requirements for joining the legions? Is any race permitted or are some confined to the auxillia?
For fantasy legions take a look at the codex: aleria series. It may provide some ideas. Fantasy auxilaries to legions provides all sorts of fun options.

I actually did a fair bit of research on the long/short sword subject. Later on the Romans changed over from the gladius to the spatha for it's increased reach. The spatha is essentially stabbing longsword.

ok, I knew that the gladius, which is the sterotypical legion weapon would be a short sword. Either works

Do you have an issue with others creating Auxialliary units?

Grom’s auxillary cohort
Made up entirely of orcs and half-orcs, the cohort is led by Grom and his cousin Haraz, a shaman, both of the green wyvern tribe. This auxillary cohort, fights as medium infantry, the majority fight with shields and battleaxes. But Grom is a cunning tactician and has equipped the strongest 5% of his warriors with heavy armour and greataxes to lead any attack and disrupt the enemy formation. These warriors led with great sweeping blows and are generally supported by the magics of Haraz. To maintain tactical flexibility some crossbowmen and spearmen have also been retained in the first cohort This strategy has led to the following organization of the cohort:
Century 1 75 orcs Grom and his bodyguards Haraz and his apprentice Heavy infantry X 20 Crossbowmen X 20 Spearmen X 30
Centuries 2-6 75 orcs each Medium infantry X 75
Famous battles include the second crossing of the Spax and the battle of 10,000 swords
